Viking Expeditions · 13 Days
Fly from London to Buenos Aires and spend seven days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula aboard Viking’s purpose built expedition ships. Flights, landings, kayaking, drinks with meals and gratuities are all in the fare.
The Voyage
Antarctic Explorer is the voyage Viking built its expedition ships for. In thirteen days you fly from London to Buenos Aires, take a charter flight to Ushuaia, cross the Drake Passage and then spend a full seven days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands. Seven days is generous for a voyage of this length. Many voyages of a similar length give you four or five days on the ice, so you get more chances at the landings, the whale encounters and the calm days that make the trip.
The voyage sails from November to March on both Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, identical sister ships carrying 378 guests in 189 staterooms. Every stateroom has a Nordic Balcony, a floor to ceiling window whose top half drops down to make an open air viewing platform, and every ship has The Hangar, an enclosed marina at the waterline that lets you step straight from the ship into a Zodiac without climbing down a gangway. With fewer than 500 guests the ships can land everyone ashore under the IAATO rules, so you will actually stand on the continent, not just look at it.
What really sets Viking apart, though, is what is in the price. Your fare includes return flights from London, the Buenos Aires to Ushuaia charter, guided tours in both cities, every landing, kayaking and the Special Operations Boats, beer and wine with meals, Wi-Fi and gratuities. When flights are not included, getting to Buenos Aires and on to Ushuaia can easily add well over a thousand pounds per person.

Day by Day
You fly out from London to Buenos Aires, where your Viking journey begins. The included tour takes you to La Boca, the old port district of painted tin houses and street tango, and to the Plaza de Mayo, the political heart of Argentina, where Eva Perón addressed the crowds from the balcony of the Casa Rosada. If you would like more time in the city, Viking offer a three night pre-cruise stay, and our gateway cities guide has ideas for what to see.
A charter flight takes you south to Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city, on the shores of the Beagle Channel. Before boarding there is an included visit to Tierra del Fuego National Park, where beech forests, peat bogs and lakes run right up to the mountains at the very end of the Andes. In the afternoon you join your ship and settle in as she slips out along the channel.
The Drake Passage is where the Atlantic, Pacific and Southern Oceans meet, and it has a reputation to match. Viking’s ships help here more than most, with large fin stabilisers and a U-tank system that damps the roll. Days at sea are busy in a good way: the Expedition Team give lectures in The Aula on wildlife, ice and polar history, albatrosses and petrels glide alongside, and you will have your mandatory biosecurity briefing before your first landing.
Seven days in Antarctica, with every one planned around the weather and the ice. Typical stops on the Peninsula include the gentoo colonies at Neko Harbour, Cuverville Island and Damoy Point, the Adélie penguins of Petermann Island, the volcanic caldera of Whalers Bay on Deception Island, the chinstraps of Half Moon Island and, when the ice allows, the towering cliffs of the Lemaire Channel or Brown Bluff on the edge of the Weddell Sea.
Most days bring a landing or a Zodiac cruise, often both, and there is time to paddle among the floes in a kayak or ride out in one of the Special Operations Boats, which can travel further and faster than a Zodiac. Back on board, the scientists in The Science Lab invite you to help with their work, from collecting water samples to logging seabirds and whales for research projects around the world. Humpback, minke and orca are all regularly seen, and leopard and Weddell seals haul out on the ice.
A last day at sea to sort through your photographs and hear the final lectures. Keep watch from the Explorers’ Lounge for icebergs drifting north and the wandering albatross, the bird with the longest wingspan on Earth.
On the way back north the ship sails close to Cape Horn, weather permitting, the rocky headland at the bottom of the Americas that sailors feared for centuries. It is a fitting final view before the calm waters of the Beagle Channel lead you back to Ushuaia.
After breakfast you disembark in Ushuaia and transfer to the airport for the charter flight to Buenos Aires, where you connect with your included flight home. If you would rather stay on, Viking’s five night Patagonia extension and a one night Buenos Aires stay can both be added.
Itineraries in Antarctica are always subject to ice, weather and wildlife, and the Captain and Expedition Leader decide each day’s landings on the spot. The order of the days and the places visited can change.

2026/27 to 2028/29 Seasons
Antarctic Explorer is Viking’s most frequent Antarctic voyage, with 41 departures still on sale between January 2027 and March 2029. Early season sailings in November and December are usually the best value, and they are the time for courting penguins and pristine snow. January and February bring penguin chicks and the warmest weather, while March is the peak month for whales. Our when to go guide explains each month.
Sixteen departures, on Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris. Eight of them are already sold out.

Prices are per person, two sharing, and include return flights from London. They are taken from Viking’s UK website on 17 October 2026, when every departure shown also carried a free drinks package for bookings made in October. Viking adjust their fares with demand, so prices and availability can change daily. Call us on 0333 405 0194 for today’s fare and the full range of staterooms on your chosen date. Single travellers, ask us about solo fares.
Your Fare
Viking fares cover far more than the cruise itself, and the biggest difference from most Antarctic voyages is the flights. Here is what your price includes:
Not included: travel insurance, which must include at least £250,000 of medical and evacuation cover, the optional submarine dives, drinks outside mealtimes and spa treatments. Our Viking what's included page goes into more detail.
Make More of It
The one optional experience most guests ask about is the submarine. Each Viking expedition ship carries two six seat submarines, and where the conditions allow you can book a dive beneath the surface of Antarctic waters, something very few people on Earth have done. Places are limited and are booked on board, so we recommend registering your interest early.
You can also add time in South America before or after the voyage. Viking offer short, fully guided extensions including three nights in Buenos Aires and the Paraná Delta, four nights at the Iguazú Falls, five nights in Patagonia and five nights in Peru, as well as Rapa Nui (Easter Island) and the Atacama Desert. Prices start from around £1,799 per person, or from £199 for a simple extra night in Buenos Aires. Ask us which ones are available on your chosen date.
Other Voyages
If you would like to cross the Antarctic Circle, Into the Antarctic Circle adds two extra days and sails beyond 66° South. For the full sub-Antarctic experience, Antarctica & South Georgia takes in the Falkland Islands and the great king penguin colonies of South Georgia. You can also compare Viking with our other cruise lines on the all Antarctica cruises page.
