New for 2028/29 · 19 Days
Four days among the king penguins, fur seals and elephant seals of South Georgia, then on to the Antarctic Peninsula as summer arrives. A round trip from Ushuaia aboard the hybrid powered MS Roald Amundsen, with two departures in November and December 2028.
The Voyage
Until now, if you wanted to see South Georgia with HX you needed three weeks and a flight to Chile to join MS Fram. This new voyage, first sailing in the 2028/29 season, brings the island into reach on a round trip from Ushuaia aboard the larger hybrid powered MS Roald Amundsen. It is the first time HX have offered South Georgia from Ushuaia on one of their big hybrid ships, and at nineteen days it is a few days shorter than the Fram voyages.
The timing is chosen for wildlife. In November and December South Georgia is at its busiest: hundreds of thousands of king penguins crowd the beaches below the glaciers, fur seal bulls are defending their stretches of shore, and young elephant seals lie about in sleepy heaps. You visit Grytviken, the old whaling station in King Edward Cove, and the grave of Sir Ernest Shackleton. Then the ship sails south to the Antarctic Peninsula, where the penguins are nesting and summer is only just taking hold.
There are a lot of sea days on this voyage, nine in all, and that is worth knowing before you book. They are far from empty. The Expedition Team run a full programme of lectures and Citizen Science, and the open ocean between Ushuaia, South Georgia and Antarctica is some of the best albatross and whale watching water in the world.

Day by Day
The voyage begins in the Argentine capital, with an included hotel night and breakfast. Buenos Aires is a city made for wandering, and if you arrive early you can join the porteños, as the locals are known, for a long dinner at a parrilla, the traditional grill, and perhaps a tango show afterwards. Suite guests are invited to welcome drinks in the city. Our gateway cities guide has ideas for a day or two here.
An included flight takes you south to Ushuaia on the Beagle Channel. Suite guests can relax at the Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa, high on the hillside above the town, before boarding. In the afternoon you join MS Roald Amundsen, meet the Expedition Team and sail out along the Beagle Channel as the mountains of Tierra del Fuego fade behind you.
Four days crossing the Southern Ocean east to South Georgia. The Expedition Team prepare you with talks on the wildlife you are about to see, on polar history, geology and glaciology, and on how to visit with the lowest possible impact. Before any landing on South Georgia every item of outdoor clothing and kit is checked and cleaned, as the island's biosecurity rules are strict. Out on deck, look for wandering and black browed albatrosses, petrels and prions following the ship.
South Georgia is often called the Serengeti of the Southern Ocean, and for once the comparison is fair. Its sweeping bays and glacial plains are home to some of the largest king penguin colonies on Earth, where tens of thousands of birds stand shoulder to shoulder on the grass, alongside fur seals, elephant seals and nesting seabirds. Depending on the weather, the Expedition Team will choose landings and small boat cruises from sites such as Salisbury Plain, St Andrews Bay, Fortuna Bay and Gold Harbour.
The ship will also attempt a call at Grytviken in King Edward Cove. The rusting whaling station is a reminder of the island's industrial past, and the museum and the little Norwegian church are well worth your time. In the cemetery lies Sir Ernest Shackleton, who died on board his ship in the harbour in 1922, and it is a tradition to raise a toast to "the Boss" at his graveside. Three days at sea heading south west towards the Antarctic Peninsula. The lectures continue, and you can join Citizen Science projects, recording seabirds and whales or photographing clouds and plankton for researchers ashore. The first icebergs, many of them broken from the great ice shelves of the Weddell Sea, usually appear before the land.
Three days exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and the South Shetland Islands in full expedition mode. Gentoo, chinstrap and Adélie penguins are busy on their nests, the snow is still thick on the land and the days are long. Conditions permitting, the ship may sail into the flooded volcanic caldera of Deception Island, and there may be the chance to go kayaking in a sheltered, icy bay. As always, the Captain and Expedition Leader choose each day's plan according to the weather and the ice.
Two days crossing the Drake Passage back to Ushuaia, with final lectures, a last look through your photographs with the onboard photographer, and time to swap stories with your fellow travellers.
The ship arrives back in Ushuaia in the morning. After disembarking you transfer to the airport for the included flight to Buenos Aires, where you can connect with your flight home or carry on to the Iguazú Falls. Suite guests have access to the VIP lounge at Ushuaia airport.
All itineraries are subject to weather, sea and ice conditions. On an expedition the route is a plan rather than a promise, and the Captain will always put your safety and the protection of the environment first.

Make More of It
In Antarctica you can add to the included landings with sea kayaking or the shorter Discovery Kayak outing in inflatable kayaks, snowshoeing, or a night camping on the snow, either in a tent or in a bivvy bag under the sky. These are booked on board once the Expedition Team know what conditions will allow, places are limited, and prices for 2028/29 are confirmed nearer the time.
After the voyage, HX offer a four day post programme to the Iguazú Falls, with a scenic train to the Devil's Throat, a walk along the river canyon and a final night in Buenos Aires. It makes a wonderful contrast after three weeks of ice and ocean. Ask us and we will put together the extras that suit you.
