Enjoying a close-up voyage to the White Continent, this tour visits the equally remote Falkland Islands and South Georgia, vital breeding ground for seal, penguin and albatross.


Itinerary

Day 1 :

Embark on the MS Fram at Buenos Aires.

Days 2 - 4 :

Set sail for the Falkland Islands. Lectures on the natural and cultural history of the Falkland Islands, an archipelago of nearly 700 islands that occupies the South Atlantic waters 480 km from Cape Horn and some 1,600 km north of Antarctica.

 

Days 5 - 6 :

Visit the remote communities of the Falkland Islands. This unique Sub-Antarctic environment is home to more than 70 animal and bird species including the King Penguin and Albatross.

 

Days 7 - 8 :

At sea, heading towards South Georgia. On board lectures against a stunning backdrop of glacial ice and emerald bays.

 

Days 9 - 10 :

You will be in South Georgia for two days, during which time you should visit Grytviken whaling station, its museum, Shackleton's grave, the whaler's church, also the abandoned Norwegian whaling station at Strømsnes and Fortuna Bay. Your visit to South Georgia is concluded by sailing into the beautiful Drygalski Fjord with its majestic cliffs.

 

Day 11 :

Whilst crossing the sea towards the Antarctic Peninsula, fascinating on-board presentations will help you prepare for the experience.

 

Days 12 - 13 :

South Orkneys. The Islands lie in the Scotia Sea about 600 km north-east of the Antarctic Peninsula and were discovered by American and British sealers in 1821. They have since served as a base for Scottish, French and Argentine sealing and scientific expeditions. You will cruise by the Washington Strait and Coronation Island before setting course towards Elephant Island and Antarctica.

 

Days 14 - 17 :

The following days see you exploring in more depth these remarkable and remote vistas. Your landing sites in Antarctica vary from voyage to voyage and largely depend on the weather and ice conditions, but landing sites may include may include Deception Island, Cuverville Island, Neko Harbour, the iceberg-lined Lemaire Channel, Paradise Harbour, Petermann Island, Port Lockroy, Wilhelmina Bay, Antarctic Sound and Brown Bluff. Look out for whales, dolphins, penguin colonies, seals and different bird species in addition to spectacular ice formations.

 

Days 17 - 18 :

Cross the infamous Drake Passage over the next 35 hours, passing Cape Horn en route to Ushuaia, enjoying more lectures on your way back to civilisation.

 

Day 19 :

Arrive in Ushuaia and disembark the MS Fram. Fly to Buenos Aires.

 

This is the itinerary for November, 2010. The voyage in February 2011 follow a similar itinerary, but operate in reverse order.
