Argentina, as famous for its gaucho way of life as the Tango, experience some some of the wonderful culture and scenery in the countryside of Buenos Aires.
The Spanish dictionary defines estancia as a cattle ranch, but in Argentina, a country of vast range land and fertile pampa, it has a much larger meaning. It conjures up a romantic image of Argentina's past, a past the country hopes to bring back to life.
In the 1800's large landowners organized their bands of gauchos - or Argentine cowboys - on huge properties, most tending vast herds of cattle and sheep, but sometimes raiding the land of rival landowners. The wealthy built palatial homes and filled them with fine furniture from Europe. A family's social standing often depended on how large its estancia was, or how many estancias it owned. The estancia was the symbol of power, wealth and national pride.
But Argentina's 40-year struggle with inflation, military governments and isolationism has changed some of that. Though still critical to the country's economy, the estancias are smaller, and their grandeur has faded. Seeking to make the ranches profitable, families have begun to open them to the public.
Exactly what constitutes gaucho culture! Basically it is the local version of cowboy culture. The men work on estancias and have a long history in the country. They are know to be hard workers and to know everything about the land, tracking, local wildlife, horses, and of course raising the some of the best beef in the world!
Take the chance to share a real Gaucho's Party, learn about the customs, traditions and tastes of this unique way of life. marvel at their impressive skills in horse riding.
Colonia del Sacramento is across the Rio de la Plata from Buenos Aires, and is the main water thoroughfare for visitors from Argentina to access any part of Uruguay. Many travelers stop to enjoy the excellent restaurants, art and craft shops, museums and a large yacht harbour. Glimpse the beautiful scenery and architecture of Colonia del Sacramento, a city with a historical charm, leading to its designation as a World Heritage Site.
